Bleed, trim and safe zone
- Trim — the final size after cutting.
- Bleed — background that extends past the trim so colors reach the edge: 1/8 in (3.175 mm) in North America, 3 mm in Europe.
- Safe zone — keep text and the QR code at least 1/8 in (3 mm) inside the trim, because cutting can shift by a millimetre.
A US card with bleed is therefore 3.75 × 2.25 in. The print PDF made here has exactly that, with the trim box set.
Pixels at 300 dpi
| Size | Without bleed | With 1/8 in bleed |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 × 2 in | 1050 × 600 px | 1125 × 675 px |
| 85 × 55 mm | 1004 × 650 px | 1075 × 720 px (3 mm) |
Print shops want at least 300 dpi. A PDF is better than an image; vector text and QR codes stay sharp at any resolution.
QR code size
Print the QR code at least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) on a business card, with its white border intact. A code with only the contact essentials (name, phone, email, company, title, website) scans well at that size. QR codes for business cards
